The hadith collections include traditional, hagiographic accounts of the verbal and physical traditions of Muhammad. In general, the majority of western academics view the hadith collections with caution. Bernard Lewis states that “The collection and recording of Hadith did not take place until several generations after the death of the Prophet. During that period the opportunities and motives for falsification were almost unlimited. According to Stephen Humphreys, while a number of “very capable” modern scholars defended the general authenticity of isnads, most modern scholars regard isnads with “deep suspicion”.
Brown points out, the Hadith Tradition is a “common sense science” or a “common sense tradition” and is “one of the biggest accomplishments in human intellectual history… in its breadth, in its depth, in its complexity and in its internal consistency. Many, but not all, scholars accept the accuracy of these biographies, though their accuracy is unascertainable. Another biography of Muhammad is that of al-Waqidi’s d.
Al-Waqidi is often criticized by early Muslim historians who state that the author is unreliable. The writers did not wish to record the life of Muhammad, but rather to describe Muhammad’s military expeditions and to preserve stories about Muhammad, his sayings and the reasons of revelations and interpretations of verses in the Quran.
Fred Donner points out that the earliest historical writings about the origins of Islam first emerged in AH, well within the first century of Hijra see also List of biographies of Muhammad.

History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved.
You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind.
Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery.
Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations. They did not have the benefit of cheap, off the shelf, mass produced batteries. For many years the telegraph, and later the telephone, industries were the only consumers of batteries in modest volumes and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that new applications created the demand that made the battery a commodity item.
In recent years batteries have changed out of all recognition.

History of Birmingham , Economic history of Birmingham , Science and invention in Birmingham , and Timeline of Birmingham history Pre-history and medieval Birmingham’s early history is that of a remote and marginal area. The main centres of population, power and wealth in the pre-industrial English Midlands lay in the fertile and accessible river valleys of the Trent , the Severn and the Avon. The area of modern Birmingham lay in between, on the upland Birmingham Plateau and within the densely wooded and sparsely populated Forest of Arden.
Instead of the economies of scale of a low-paid, unskilled workforce producing a single bulk commodity such as cotton or wool in large, mechanised units of production, Birmingham’s industrial development was built on the adaptability and creativity of a highly paid workforce with a strong division of labour , practising a broad variety of skilled specialist trades and producing a constantly diversifying range of products, in a highly entrepreneurial economy of small, often self-owned workshops.
Birmingham was the terminus for both of the world’s first two long-distance railway lines: During the Victorian era , the population of Birmingham grew rapidly to well over half a million and Birmingham became the second largest population centre in England. Birmingham was granted city status in by Queen Victoria. The city established its own university in The city was also the scene of two scientific discoveries that were to prove critical to the outcome of the war.
The Bull Ring was reconstructed and New Street station was redeveloped. In the decades following World War II, the ethnic makeup of Birmingham changed significantly, as it received waves of immigration from the Commonwealth of Nations and beyond. The bombings were the worst terror attacks in Great Britain up until the London bombings and consisted of bombs being planted in two pubs in Central Birmingham. Six men were convicted , who became known later as the Birmingham Six and sentenced to life imprisonment, who were acquitted after 16 years by the Court of Appeal.
